Day 1578 | From Little Things
One of my favourite photos. A new sign sitting on a wall in an empty office with a hope of a small business starting successfully.
Since covid, the real estate market here in Tassie and especially in the North-West has been pretty crazy. The growth has been unheard of and was very unexpected after coming out of a pandemic where nobody had any clue if we would be locked down for weeks or months. A whole heap of small businesses didn’t survive those times at all, and for Hudson365…. it was pretty daunting to be trying to build a new agency from scratch and then have a brick wall built in front of you that nobody saw coming.
But we made it through, and luckily for us the real estate industry has thrived ever since. It has genuinely been a great couple of years in business for us (and I assume a lot of agencies) but there’s a whole lot of stories that are untold in business. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows and while we’ve definitely made some hay in the last little period, the work to get there is not a walk in the park.
There are things that you a lot of the time choose to do even though it takes you 3times longer than it would a professional, and all to try and save your cash flow. In the last few years of owning businesses, I think I average probably 20hours per week of this stuff. It’s not fun, and they are mostly time sensitive and can’t wait for ‘tomorrow’. For me, these are the things I do outside normal hours at 10pm with a glass of wine. It’s all part of it but it comes with added stress that’s for sure. Lots of small business owners have to do these things simply because it’s not affordable to get the experts in. So they smash in and a majority of the time see zero reward for those actions.
So when I look around our town and start to see empty shops and more small businesses really struggling, it scares me a bit. It’s about time we all look to support them the best we can. Go buy books from the bookshop in the mall, eat at the little cafe not just the fast food chain, and back the people that gave you a helping hand when you needed it (in life or business or both!).
