Day 1522 | Human Nature

Last week I witnessed something new. And while it wasn’t a huge deal, it made me think a lot about where we at are these days.

Sitting in my office after hours with music nice and loud, smashing out some paperwork and I heard and almighty crack out the front. I genuinely thought someone had launched a rock through our front window. I leapt up and saw an older lady looking at the back of her car and then perplexed just walked into the supermarket and 60seconds later came out with milk. Casual as anything. She again glanced at her car, then jumped in and left. As she drove off I could see a huge split in the bumper of the Mazda that was parked behind her.

Now as a little FYI, we have cameras at our office so I went back through the footage and sure enough, she had hit this car (hard and at a fair pace) and clearly knew that she’d done it. And then not only drove off, but not before strolling into the shop and getting what she needed.

Not a lady that looked like she wouldn’t have insurance or even someone that was happy to watch the world burn, just a regular human that is someone’s mum, and probably someone’s nan.

After going into all the shops around us looking for the owner, I resigned to leaving a note on the damaged cars window saying I had the footage and to give me a call. But the casual nature of this person not owning up to what was a simple mistake was odd to me.

Is this what is normal now? Is it just see if you can get away with it and move on? Feels like we need to work on being better humans. Well the lady in the Nissan XTrail does that’s for sure.

You make a mistake, own up to it. Karma is a real thing, I can tell you that. Hope she has insurance because she’s about to get a phone call she didn’t expect.
