Day 1472 | Strengths and Weaknesses

When I started my first agency, my role was the actual definition of a ‘Jack of a trades’. I was involved in every aspect of that business from Day 1. I was the paperwork guy, the salesman, the financial controller, the hr manager, the marketer, the IT man and even the cleaner. Was it hard wearing so many hats? Absolutely. But it was necessary to make a start and get the thing off the ground while money was tight and the risk was huge.

I had someone ask me recently why these days at H365 I pay people to put up for sale signs for me, and why I’ve hired a photographer in house and why I spent so much money on creating a brand with a specialist marketing group instead of doing all of these things myself… the list went on.

The answer is unbelievably easy. There are people much better at those things than me so why wouldn’t I have them on the team?

Yes I could save money and carry around signs and equipment to put them up, I could take my own photos and mock up my own brand ideas on Microsoft Paint. I could keep the money I spend on a rockstar Assistant and do all the paperwork and organising myself.

Or (to maintain my sanity) I could engage experts in each of those fields and pay them to be the best at those jobs while I try to be elite at what I’m good at, and what I enjoy. I feel like my strength is in working direct with people to sell houses. Simple. Smashing results I can be proud of and gets the clients that pay us, exactly where they want to be. And by having great people in our corner I get to actually focus on those exact things, instead of being distracted by tasks that take me 3 times as long as others to complete.

So you won’t see me doing any of those jobs that I listed above. And seriously, for anyone that knows me well, I can’t swing a hammer, use a drill or line anything up level to save myself. I’d end up sticky taping signs in front windows.

Stay in your lane and double down on the things you excel at and love the most. Try to be an expert in your field and get some amazing humans around you to lift your game. It’s much more fun.
