Day 233 | “Please... Don’t Say Thank You”
Day 233 | “Please... Don’t Say Thank You”
It’s not a secret that I have a real problem with people doing ‘good things’ on the surface only to be really just trying to benefit themselves. You know the ones, the people that have to tell you 8 times that they gave money to a charity, or continually post on social about how much they care for others. It’s like that saying, if someone has to tell you how much you can trust them... then you probably can’t. Some other people tend to do it under the cover of darkness, and it’s these folks that are the real MVPs.
We always wanted to be able to use the business to be able to give without the expectation of return, and to be able to use our platform to do some good work. It’s nice to feel like you can do something to help, and without wanting a medal at the end. It’s always about actions, and I saw an example of this only last week.
Someone who I only know a little contacted me via Facebook last weekend and quizzed me about the upcoming event. It was a bit weird because the questions were things like “how much is that going to cost” and “who covers that” and I don’t know them well enough, so I dodged around and gave them very limited answers. It almost felt like they were trying to find out things to report back to someone.
Within 2 days that same person came back to me and asked again if I could be specific about costs. I started to write back quite a firm and almost rude reply, when I stopped and just simply said ‘is there a reason why you’re asking’. The answer was this:
‘I can’t come because we are away but I want to pay for something. How about the venue?’
After a lot of back and forth, it works out that they are just bloody generous humans and want nothing in return, but also wanted to remain anonymous. I tried to find out why but the response was repeated, ‘it’s not about me’ and ‘please don’t say thank you just keep doing these things when you can’. Amazing.
Kind of restores your faith in people. The offers of sponsorship and help/support have been phenomenal and it’s those people that the world needs more of. If you’re one of them, a genuine thank you.
