Day 1286 | The Takeaway

Did the heading grab you? I’m not talking KFC if that’s what you were thinking. Although a good Zinger Combo never hurt anyone…

The tone of this blog is a somber one. Sadly less than 2 weeks ago, a guy that I looked up to lost his life. Not a family member of mine, and not someone that I’ve known for decades but a gentleman that I had my first encounter with only 12months ago.

Someone that through connections had become a mate, a listening ear and someone that I respected because of their intention to help others at every turn. A guy that used his experience to have an impact on people that didn’t always have great opportunities.

I spoke to him more than I do with some of my good mates, about things that frustrated me, how I wanted to encourage change and how to find ways to be better in life and in work. Sometimes it was as simple as talking footy, or basketball or sharing a story about this ‘one time on a lads trip’. No matter what it was, I hit him up regularly for advice drawing from his years and years of experience.

After speaking on the Thursday, he asked me if I could catch up with him before the weekend for a chat and I gave him the regular line from my playbook that I was ‘too busy’ Friday and I’d debrief with him Saturday.

That next chat didn’t get a chance to happen.

And while I spent almost a week beating myself up for it, I’ve now resigned to the fact that wonderful people cross your path for a reason at different stages of your life. They have an impact on how you choose to live from that point on. To not sweat the small stuff and to embrace the time you have to make your mark and find genuine happiness.

So what’s the takeaway?

Time is precious. The relationships you build are what shapes your future and when you get an opportunity to just ‘catch up’ with someone you enjoy being around, then do it. In fact, do me a favour… send someone special a message right now and make time for them. You both need it.

Life is honestly too short.
