Day 1328 | Where to draw the line

Athletics carnival at the lads school today and as always Simone and I take the day off to be there for cheer squad duties.

Now while I’m the most confident bloke going around, a lot of that hasn’t rubbed off on the big fella just yet and he gets super nervous for things like this. It didn’t help when in the cross country a couple of years ago he lost a shoe in the first 50metres right in front of the whole school. That little memory sticks with him and he really needs a good slice of encouragement to get him going at anything similar.

So with gold coloured hairspray on the head and some yellow battle stripes on his face, the legend went to work in his races.

He was solid as. Still trying to control the super long limbs he’s got going on but his racing was awesome. However nothing prepared us for the moment at the end of the 400m race. Coming in 3rd in a pretty quick little crew of 8year olds the dude threw a hand into the sidelines for a high 5 from the kids cheering right near the finish line. All of a sudden Hudson sees his friend there in the crowd, promptly stops and turns around to give him a personal high 5 as his mate. The problem was, he didn’t cross the finish line…. By half an inch.

After 5 long seconds of yelling and pointing from teachers and students to take one more step, he did just before 4th and 5th arrived.

Now he got a 3rd ribbon which is good but nobody is going to remember the 3rd place runner in a Grade 3 race at a school carnival. What will be remembered is this moment caught on camera by his mum where the race meant absolutely nothing and his friendship was the priority.

Real genuine stuff that makes you wonder why we don’t take more life lessons from our kids.
