Day 1650 | Extended Family

While we’ve had a real estate market that has been booming the last couple of years, I’ve spent a majority of my spare time (outside of selling houses) running a basketball club. It’s been challenging to say the least but with zero experience coming in, it was always going to be.

So while my knowledge and love for the game has grown (a sport I’ve never had anything to do with outside of collecting basketball cards as a kid) it has still been a difficult path at times. The one thing that has been a constant in the last 2 years is the amount of high quality people we’ve met along the way. I’ve made some awesome friends. Great coaches, supportive board members, passionate volunteers and basketball fans in general but there’s also been a large amount of contact with some pretty amazing players.

While the local talent usually have their families close by, the professionals that come in on contracts either arrive from the big island or some of the time from the other side of the world. It was KaVaughn Scott last year, and this year we’ve had Venky Jois and Sekou Sylla with us a bit, and we’ve loved every second of being their foster family.

Sekou is a respectful, grounded young man that’s a long way away from his support base in the USA and has not only performed above expectation on court but he’s been a valued member of the Leslie crew the whole time. We’ll miss him a bunch when he goes next week.

So even with all the hard stuff, basketball has been worth it for meeting those brilliant humans.

In life sometimes people are with us for a long time and sometimes a very short time, but the time itself is extremely valuable no matter the length and we need to take what we can away from each interaction. There’s always a purpose behind why people cross your path, and while it affects you when they leave, that just means they’ve had an impact.

And generally that means…. you’ve had an impact on them too.
