Day 251 | And Only 3 Little Ducks Came Back
Day 251 | And Only 3 Little Ducks Came Back
Officially the weirdest Sunday I’ve had for a while. We were just about to head to ‘Mamas’ for our regular family lunch when I caught some people out the front of our place laying on the road. Yup, you heard right, laying.... on the road. What followed was an epic 2 hours.
My exact words to Simone were, “there’s people on the road out here and I think there’s little kids there too”. So with that I chucked on some shoes and went to investigate, CSI style.
Works out the lady was from Wildlife rescue and a group of ducklings were caught in the stormwater drain. She had the grate up and was having no luck getting close to where they were stuck. Then all of a sudden, she got them! All 3. They were in a Tupperware container and it looked like job done.
Then a faint little noise from the pipes. There was one more. And it was in a panic. For the next 2 hours, we all did things from recording the chirps and playing them down the pipes, to manually pulling out massive amounts of mud and leaves to get the little guy as close to the top as possible. We pulled storm water plans from the internet, ventured down the drains with headlamps, strapped cameras to the end of hoses, and other odd stuff. I suffered more leg cramps in those confined spaces than I felt in my very short football career.
Passers by stopped to help (including the wonderful Mark and Sandy Templar) and with a heap of teamwork we eventually got that little duckling back with his crew! I’ve never seen Simone so bloody excited!
The lady leading the charge was awesome. Just a genuinely kind human who couldn’t leave that fluffy dude behind. There are some amazing people out there that really do care. Weird day, but I’m marking it down as one to remember.
